03/26-04/02 - Name Tower

Name Tower

Lesson Objective: Students will understand the seven lines of art (zig zag, diagonal, horizontal, vertical, curved, dotted and dashed), and how to use them aesthetically in a work of art.

Essential Skill to be Mastered: To be able to use the seven different types of line in art to create an original piece of 2-dimensional artwork using the letters of their name.

I Can Statement: I can create a name tower using the 7 lines of art.

Teaching Strategy: I will first ask the students what looks like happens to tall buildings when you are standing at the bottom looking up toward the top of the building, or what happens to objects when they get farther away. They get smaller. They will then see an example of a name tower and I go online and show them different examples of the project. They then have to practice on scratch paper how to draw their name different heights from large to small and letters in different directions. Students do this while I am modeling on the front board how to do it correctly. I will use guided instruction on a daily basis to ensure they are following directions and using proper craftsmanship.

Materials:
12x18 drawing paper
Pencil
Markers
Black sharpie

Instructions:
1. With the paper laying vertical, have students use block letters and draw the letters of their name (first, last, or both) starting at the bottom of the paper. The letters will be large at the bottom and get smaller as they rise to the top of the paper.
2. Make sure that the letters are touching spots to create closed shapes to put line designs in.
3. Use markers to color in each of the letters.
4. In the closed spaces between the letters use a pencil to draw different designs using the 7 lines of art.
5. After all the designs have been drawn go over them with a fine point sharpie.

03/11-03/14 - Classroom Rules

CLASSROOM RULES POSTER

Lesson Objective: SWBAT list and understand the rules of the art classroom and use that understanding to create an original creative poster depicting those rules.

Essential Skill To Be Mastered: To understand the rules and procedures of their art classroom.

I Can Statement: I can design and create a poster showing classroom rules and procedures in the art classroom.

Teaching Strategy: Day 1 - I start this project by giving each table five minutes and one sheet of writing paper and have the students talk with each other about what they think the rules of the classroom should be and for one student from each table to write those ideas down. After five minutes I then have someone from each table tell the class one of the rules they have written down while I write them on the front board. After all tables have stated a different rule or agreed on a rule that is already written I then suggest rules and write them on the board also. I have someone pass out the poster paper while I show the students an example of the poster they are to create. As I am telling them the instructions I also write those instructions on the front board where they will stay until the project is to be completed so the students always know what their expectations are. Days 2-5 I use guided practice to help ensure the students are following the instructions and to give help and encouragement where it is needed.

Materials:
12x18 poster paper
Pencil
Colored pencils
Crayons
Markers
Rulers

Instructions:
1: Using a pencil and a ruler for straight lines make a border around the entire paper. The border can be designed any way the students want it to be.
2: Make the title of the poster "Classroom Rules".
3: List all of the rules that the class has listed that are written on the board making sure that they are numbered.
4: Students can use the ruler to make lines to write on.
5: Make sure that most of the white paper has been colored, designed or written on.

03/05-03/08 - Pointillism

Pointillism

Lesson Objective - SWBAT understand the work of Georges Seurat and how to create a picture using dots of color.

Essential Skill To Be Mastered: To create a picture out of colored dots.

I Can Statement: I can create a picture using with dots of color.

Teaching Strategy: I start this project by asking the students what they think of dots. I then show them pictures of the work of Georges Seurat and introduce them to pointillism. I explain the process of creating one color by using dots of certain colors placed close together to give the illusion of a different color. I show them examples of student work and models how close the dots need to be for the best look. The students compare the different examples and discuss the quality and craftsmanship of each. I use guided practice to make sure students are following instructions and staying on task.

Materials:
9x12 drawing paper
Magazines
Pencil
Markers

Instructions:
1. Find a picture in a magazine to reproduce and cut out.
2. Lightly draw the picture on the drawing paper.
3. Use markers to create dots of color using the colors from the magazine picture.
4. When finished with dots erase all pencil lines.

02/19-02/28 - Color Scheme Painting

Color Scheme Paintings

Lesson Objective: SWBAT understand the the difference between the color schemes warm, cool, monochromatic, and and analogous, and apply that knowledge to three different paintings.

Essential Skill To Be Mastered: To create 4 different paintings, one using cool colors, one using warm colors, one using analogous colors, and one using a monochromatic color scheme.

I Can Statement: I can create 4 different painting using one different color scheme (warm, cool, analogous, and monochromatic) for each picture.

Lesson Strategy: Day 1 - Talk again about color schemes and the definition (an organizer for color) Call on students to come up and write a different scheme of the 8 different color schemes on the board. Show them different examples of each of the color schemes they will be using to help ensure they use the proper color schemes when painting. Day 2-5 - Question students each to help cement their understanding of the different color schemes. Use guided practice and give one-on-one help to those who need it.

Materials:
Four 9x12 sheets of drawing paper
Tempera paint
Paint brush
Pencil
Water cup
Paper towels
Paint palette

Instructions:
1. Have students draw 4 similar drawings, on on each paper.
2. Paint each drawing a different color scheme (one each of warm, cool, analogous, and monochromatic).

02/25 - Value Study

Value Study

Lesson Objective: Students will understand value in art and how to make different values of one color.

Essential Skill to be Mastered: To be able to create seven different shades of one color.

I Can Statement: I can create seven different varying shades using just one color.

Teaching Strategy: First talk about value and how it is used to create depth in picture. Then show an example of what they will be doing. Then model how to create a consistant darkening value using just one color or a graphite pencil. Then show students how to apply that value to turn a shape into what looks like a 3D picture. Use guided practice to ensure students understand how to go from a white object to a dark object using just 7 darkening values.

Materials:
12x18 drawing paper
Pencil
Colored pencils
Ruler

Instructions:
1. Students will draw 7 of the same shapes on one side of the paper and 7 different shapes on the other side.
2. Number the shapes 1-7.
3. Number 1 will be white (students will not have to color it).
4. Numbers 2 -7 will be a value scale going from the lightest of the color in number 2 and darkening in each consecutive number until number 7 is the darkest.
5. One side students will use a regular pencil and the other side students will use a colored pencil.

02/01-02/08 - High Fives

High Fives

Lesson Objective: SWBAT apply their understanding of shape and texture into making a 3D creation of their hand using paper, glue, and yarn.

Essential Skill to be Mastered: Manipulating material to create their hand using paper, yarn and glue.

I Can Statement: I can create my own hand on paper using yarn and glue.

Teaching Strategy: Day 1 - To start this project I talk with the students about texture and have them find different items in the room that have texture and then I have them find items that look like they have a texture. I then show the example of the finished product, give out paper and have students trace their own hands, after which I model easier techniques for gluing the yarn and show how close together each strand should be. Days 2-5 - Use guided practice to make sure students are gluing yarn strand close together and to ensure they are following the rest of the guidelines.

Vocabulary:
Texture

Materials:
10x10 poster paper
Pencil
Yarn
Scissors
Glue

Instructions:
1. Trace around hand making sure fingers are spread apart.
2. Cut enough yarn of desired color to fit all the way around the hand line.
3. Apply a strip of glue about 2 inched in length to the hand line.

01/28-01/30 - Texture Practice

Texture Practice

Lesson Objective: SWBAT understand that texture is how something feels or looks like it feels and how to create the look of texture on a 2D surface.

Essential Skill to be Mastered: How to create simulated texture.

I Can Statement: I can create the look of texture on paper.

Teaching Strategy:  I started a conversation about textures and some of the places they could be found. We watch a PowerPoint showing different textures and how when there are many objects (like pebbles) together it creates a texture while each individual pebble has its own texture. I then asked them to get up and walk around the room to feel and find different textures. We then discussed objects that looked like they had a rough texture but were indeed smooth. After discussion I showed them an example of the practice texture they were going to create and modeled how to do it.

Vocabulary:
Texture
Simulate
Tactile

Materials:
9x12 Drawing paper
Pencil

Instructions:
1. Fold paper in half.
2. Fold in half again.
3. Fold in half one more time and unfold to show 8 different sections.
4. Draw a line across each fold line in order to see each section.
5. Fill each section with a different texture pattern.
6. There should be 8 different patterns.
